PERSONAL WORK

Derrick brings to light moments those outside of his background know little or nothing about. His imagery engages the viewer, creating a curiosity about the many tribes, not only in our nation, but throughout North America. He is drawn to bold colors, creative light and texture. Derrick has dedicated himself to creating images that express indigenous culture, and spiritual celebration. For most of us, his personal journey and heritage is exotic and beautiful, the ceremonies and beliefs seldom known. With Los Angeles being Derrick's home for nearly 18 years, he holds one foot planted in urban city life, and the other foot deeply embedded in the red soil of the beautiful Navajo Nation of the southwest. As such, Derrick Yazzie balances, and embraces the two worlds.
